Who is Calumbus?

Calumbus is the business name/idea of Calum MacLennan. Calum was born in 1977 in the city of Nottingham, and was bitten by the transport bug at a very young age. His aunt is responsible for his interest due to taking him out for walks in the pram and returning to the house by bus.

At a very early age his parents moved to the Clifton Estate situated on the south west corner of Nottingham. The house was a new build, and backed onto the A453, a major trunk road into the city. The traffic was observed from his bedroom window and most types of cars and lorries could be identified by the young Calum very early on. The traffic was also a fascination in the school yard, and a passion for buses was discovered by the age of 6.

The next development in the interest was during Calum’s teens, where excursions were made to the city centre and in particular the Victoria and Broadmarsh bus stations, where the comings and goings were seen most holidays and weekends. Excursions further afield were made to Derby, Sheffield, and Birmingham. These were made without the knowledge of his parents.

To fund these adventures numerous part time jobs were undertaken, which included a paper round and sweeping the buses of local coach firm K & M Gagg. Calum was moving vehicles around the yard by the age of 15.

After college, employment was sought at a growing ambitious coach firm called Dunn Line. In the three years employed the company trebled in size, and a variety of tasks were performed for the company including engineering records, traffic admin, and payroll.

After three years it was time to move on and a trainee driver position was taken at the small family firm called Bellamy Coaches. Once through the training and having passed his test Calum embarked on coach driving in the UK, and the odd occasional shopper to France. Calum’s time at Bellamy saw him rise through the ranks to undertake admin duties for the company alongside driving. At one point the company tried to run a heritage service in Nottingham, sadly this proved unsuccessful, but with some hard lessons learned.

Sadly the company hit some hard times and reluctantly it was time for Calum to move on to pastures new. A position of driver was taken at Paul S Winson Coaches in Loughborough. A new geographical knowledge was gained during this time. After 18 months due to a variety of personal circumstances Calum took a break from the industry while future ventures were looked at.

After a few months it was decided to return to the industry in a part time capacity so other ventures could be undertaken alongside the driving. Various positions were taken at several local coach firms. He later decided to become a fully fledged freelance driver with a growing client base. During this time he developed other skills including photography.

Calum’s commitment to continual improvement and investment of skills has led to the gaining of new experiences and the assumption of new challenges, and he feels it is important to continually learn about new ways of working. He has reached an exciting point in life and this website is just the beginning of the next chapter in the adventures of Calum.

This is a coach that Calum used to drive during his days at Bellamy in Nottingham.  It is seen several years after closure of the business.
